January 30 - 31, February 1, 2009 ~ Sarasota Native North American Indian Festival

Come experience the traditions and culture of the Native American people at the Second annual Sarasota Indian Festival on January 30th, 31st and Feb 1st at the Oscar Scherer State Park, 1843 S. Tamiami Trail from 10am to 6pm on Sat and Sun, and 10-5 on Sunday. Find hand made, authentic, one of a kind arts and crafts. There will be paintings, pottery, jewelry, sculpture, bead work, leather work, along with traditional Seminole and Navajo food. Sarasota Indian Festival is honored to have Little BigMountain from the Mohawk/Comanche nation and his dance troupe, who will be entertaining and educating the public throughout the weekend. They will be performing traditional Native American drumming, singing and various styles of dance. There will also be entertainment from Will Harjo from the Creek nation, who will be performing his flute music and story telling. Also, Alan Mosey Jr. from the Dineh(Navajo) nation will be performing his traditional drumming, singing and storytelling at the second stage. A portion of the proceeds from the event will go towards the Oscar Scherer State Park renovations fund to help the maintenance and upkeep of this beautiful park. This is a free event open to families and the general public.  Coast Salish Territory Vancouver.  This is a worldwide call to Indigenous Peoples and Humankind to join together.  According to a 500 year old Otomi (Mexico) Prophecy, the day when the sounds of eight thousand sacred drums join together an intense healing.  Healing of Mother Earth will commence.  The earth we share today is in total disequilibrium.  Let's work together so we can live together on the road to Sacred Peace, in harmony with the Universe, Mother Nature, the Community, the Family and our own Hearts.

- Elders opening, followed by speakers

This is a family Event! You are invited to the 3rd Woman Nation’s “Prayer for the People. This is a family camping event for learning, sharing and ceremony. The dance will start Tuesday night, there will also be circles for teachings, a daily activity time for the children and lodges at night followed in the late evening with the women’s dance. There are free camping spots and limited RV spots for a nominal fee but you must call 706-371-5009 to reserve these. You may arrive as early as Saturday, June 13. Each camp is responsible for their own food and cooking. Please bring non perishable donations for the camp kitchen where there will be some “quick” foods set up for the kids. There will be separate lodges each night for men, women and children. The dance itself begins late Tuesday night (16th) until sunrise each morning, thru Saturday morning with the feast following in early afternoon. Volunteers are needed for security, kitchen, children's circles, etc. There will be Circles for men and women with some special guests coming in for these. Please remember we appreciate and are in desperate need of your financial support/donations as there are many expenses that occur from travel expenses for elders, food and supplies for the kitchen, supplies for the children’s circles, porta-potties and the list goes on... we thank you for what you are able to do to support the continuation of this dance!!
